Puffins in Alaska

Last September we had the opportunity to take our dream trip to Alaska. This was a trip that was in the talks for many years. And what a trip it was! We fell in love with Alaska and are already planning our next trip there. We need to take more then just 10 days to see everything we want to see next trip!

One of my husbands favorite birds is the puffin. I think one of the highlights of this trip for him was finally getting to see them!

We saw two species of puffin, the Tufted Puffin and the Horned Puffin.

These are photos of the Tufted Puffins.

And here is a Horned Puffin.

Puffins spend most of their lives at sea where they hunt fish and rest floating in the water. Their beaks are only colorful during mating season, other times of the year they are a drab gray color. There are three species, the Tufted Puffin, the Horned Puffin, and the Atlantic Puffin.
